OUR STORY
Dear Reader, Parallel Ink’s story begins with a goodbye. In the summer of 2012, Puinoon Na Nakorn and I said a tearful farewell to Jiyoon Jeong, who was moving to South Korea. We had all met in seventh grade at the International School of Bangkok, and we quickly became friends over a shared love of fandoms, English, math, and art. When Jiyoon moved, we decided that we wanted to create a project that would allow us to continue making cool things together. After several emails, long-distance Skype calls, and shared Google documents, we decided that we’d make a magazine. None of us had ever done something like this before. We’d written fanfiction together of epic portions (over one hundred pages!) but we’d never worked on a publication. We were still middle-schoolers. Luckily for us, we were met with lots of support and enthusiasm from our schools, teachers, and other kids passionate about writing and art. Eventually, our hard work led to the release of PI’s first issue in November 2012 - a slim, well-loved twenty-page PDF volume of poems, essays, and short stories. Today, Parallel Ink is truly an international labor of love - the magazine on your screens is run by a team of twenty-seven teenagers from six different countries. As of summer 2014, we’ve had submissions from over twenty-two American states and eleven countries, and we’ve published interviews of up-and-coming teen talents from around the world such as author Anna Caltabiano to environmentalist Emma Freedman and singer Tri Giao Vu. Parallel Ink’s last PDF issue (July 2014) clocked in at a staggering one hundred and seven pages of illustrations, poems, personal essays, informative essays, short stories, interviews, editorials, and photography (and even two book-inspired recipes!). Happy reading! Yours in writing, Jamie Uy, Co-Founder You can read more about PI in the following features/interviews (click article name to be redirected):
